Finding productive things to do? Or you just simply want to try something new? Or are you thinking of doing a hobby again you have not done for a long time because of your busy schedule? Here are some activities you can try at home so you would not be attracted to go out anymore. Better to stay home to keep yourself and other people safe.
Read books
Whether you want to read an interesting story or educate yourself and gain new knowledge, books are the best pick. You can choose from a wide range of categories such as self-development, novels, educational textbooks, comics, etc. Look through your shelf or cabinet for the books you have stored that you have not yet read or you want to reread. Otherwise, you can buy books online, may it be a printed book or an e-book.
Here are some books suggestions you can read:
- In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day by Mark Batterson
- The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom
- Life of Pi by Yann Martel
Draw or Color
May it be a hobby, a profession, or a fresh interest, doing art is a great feat. Bring out that sketchbook or coloring book. Well, you may opt to buy online for art materials as well or if you have a digital device like an iPad or drawing pad, you can use them too.
Learn a language
Want to travel the world? Make yourself be able to communicate with foreign people. Or maybe you just want to understand the foreign film or drama you are watching without subtitles. Then, start learning a new language. You may download a language learning app, listen to podcasts, or search for free materials online.
Try these helpful learning materials:
- Duolingo App on Android or Ios (with over 35 languages available)
- Spotify podcast ā Talk to Me in Korean
Watch TV series or movies
An action-filled genre fan? Rom-com fan? Or mystery-thriller fan? Or a fantasy fan? Or a sci-fi enthusiast? You can watch films and dramas from around the world in your own home. From Hollywood, Bollywood, to Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, and more! With access to online streaming sites, just sit down and relax, prepare your snacks, and click the play button.
Here are some suggestions to watch:
- Studio Ghibli Animation Movies (My Neighbor Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies, Spirited Away, Howlās Moving Castle)
- Before Trilogy (Before Sunset, Before Sunrise, Before Midnight)

Browse videos
Interested in other kinds of videos like documentaries, vlogs, music videos, instructional videos, and more? Then, go ahead, explore, and watch. You will find a wide range of videos online that offers various information and entertainment. YouTube, Viu, and Netflix are some of the many websites you can access.
Chat or call your loved ones
Missing your loved ones? Since going outside and attending gatherings have been limited due to pandemic, an alternative to still keep in touch with our family and friends is through call or chat. A huge thanks to technology, we can easily connect with our loved ones. Spend time with them virtually to catch up, update, and tell stories. Popular messaging apps include Messenger, Skype, and Zoom. You can do a one-on-one call or even a group call. Gather them all together and enjoy!
Make arts and crafts
Showcase your creativity. Make arts and crafts comfortably at home. Do sewing, crochet stitching, DIY projects, and more. You can also use recyclable materials for your masterpiece! Beautify your home and save the earth at the same time.
Do household chores
This might be quite challenging but rewarding at the end. Clean your room or the whole house ā Since you will be staying home longer, why not make it clean? Get help from the expert Marie Kondo using her KonMari Method of Tidying.
Cook
Of course, we love eating! Well, why not prepare your own meals? There are many healthy and delicious recipes you can search online. Experiment with the ingredients you can access. Bring out that cooking skills of yours or if you are a beginner, just take the challenge and learn how to cook (it might even become an added skill for you).
All these activities are suitable for all ages! So, what are you waiting for? Try them out!
Even though we are facing a huge crisis right now, continue to find ways of coping up with the situation. Make an effort to still encourage yourself or develop your skills and abilities. Remember to be grateful for what you have and seek opportunities to grow. It is okay to feel down but you need to get up and be courageous. Be strong and positive. Help yourself and extend help to others as much as you can. We can do it!
